Safety Leadership Assessment
Leadership is what the organisation rewards, resources and tolerates — not what it declares.
The SDIA™ Safety Leadership Assessment measures how leaders translate safety values into decisions, priorities, resources and visible behaviour under operational pressure. It goes beyond self-report leadership surveys to assess the decision intelligence that shapes what leaders actually do when safety and production conflict.
Why safety leadership needs measurement
Safety leadership is too often assessed through stated values, survey scores or attendance at safety meetings. None of these capture the decisions that define leadership: what gets funded, what gets stopped, what gets investigated, what is tolerated, and how ambiguity is resolved under pressure. A leader can score well on a culture survey while major-hazard controls quietly weaken — the gap that precedes serious events.
The SDIA™ assessment addresses this by measuring the underlying decision intelligence — Analytical Risk, Operational Discipline, Human Leadership, Adaptive Thinking, Risk Judgement and Safety Leadership itself — rather than asking leaders to rate their own leadership style. The result is a profile of how a leader decides, communicated in terms that connect directly to development and coaching.
What the assessment reveals
Visible leadership behaviour
Whether a leader is judged through what they do — inspect, fund, stop, follow up — or only through what they say.
Decision-making under pressure
How a leader handles ambiguous evidence, time pressure and the trade-off between reassurance and the credible worst case.
Psychological safety and challenge
Whether concerns and weak signals can travel upward to the decision-maker, or whether silence substitutes for safety.
Adaptive judgement
Whether a leader recognises when the plan no longer fits reality and adapts within disciplined safeguards.
Operational discipline
Whether a leader upholds critical controls and verifies that procedures match the real state of work.
Symbolic vs operational leadership
The gap between stated priorities and what budgets, metrics and rewards actually communicate.
Six dimensions of safety decision intelligence
SDIA™ measures six interdependent capabilities that together determine how safely a person decides, leads and acts under operational pressure.
Analytical Risk Intelligence
Understand the evidence before making the decision.
How you use evidence, logic, and data to assess risk before acting.
Learn moreOperational Discipline Intelligence
Turn safety expectations into consistent operational behaviour.
How you value planning, systems, compliance, and consistency.
Learn moreHuman Leadership Intelligence
Create the conditions in which people are willing to speak, challenge and contribute.
How you build trust, engagement, and psychological safety.
Learn moreAdaptive Thinking Intelligence
Recognise when reality has changed—and change with it.
How you navigate innovation, uncertainty, and change.
Learn moreRisk Judgement Intelligence
Make proportionate decisions when certainty is impossible.
How you make decisions under pressure and tolerate uncertainty.
Learn moreSafety Leadership Intelligence
Turn safety values into visible organisational action.
How visibly you lead and influence safety culture.
Learn moreHow leaders use the results
The SDIA™ leadership report presents each dimension as a balanced profile — a core strength alongside its potential overuse — so development targets are specific rather than generic. A leader strong in Adaptive Thinking but watchful for uncontrolled improvisation receives a different development path from one strong in Operational Discipline at risk of rigidity.
Reports support one-to-one coaching, leadership development programmes, executive team reviews and succession planning. Organisations running cohort assessments can compare leadership profiles across teams and sites to target where leadership development investment will have the greatest effect on major-hazard safety.
