Safety Decision Intelligence
How people think, assess risk, decide and lead when safety is on the line.
Safety Decision Intelligence is the integrated set of capabilities that determine how individuals and organisations make safety-critical decisions under uncertainty, pressure and change. The SDIA™ assessment measures six dimensions to reveal strengths, blind spots and development priorities.
What is Safety Decision Intelligence?
Safety decisions are rarely made with complete information. They are made under time pressure, competing priorities, incomplete evidence and human factors that shape what people notice, what they challenge and what they decide to do.
Safety Decision Intelligence brings together the cognitive, behavioural and leadership capabilities that determine whether a person makes defensible safety decisions when it matters. It moves beyond measuring what people know about safety toward understanding how they think, judge and act when the procedure does not fit, the data is ambiguous, or the pressure is on.
The SDIA™ framework draws upon established research in human factors, high-reliability organisations, naturalistic decision-making, resilience engineering and safety culture. It is a professional leadership development tool — not a clinical or psychometric diagnosis — and is designed for reflection, coaching and organisational learning rather than recruitment or disciplinary decisions.
Six dimensions of safety decision intelligence
SDIA™ measures six interdependent capabilities that together determine how safely a person decides, leads and acts under operational pressure.
Analytical Risk Intelligence
Understand the evidence before making the decision.
How you use evidence, logic, and data to assess risk before acting.
Learn moreOperational Discipline Intelligence
Turn safety expectations into consistent operational behaviour.
How you value planning, systems, compliance, and consistency.
Learn moreHuman Leadership Intelligence
Create the conditions in which people are willing to speak, challenge and contribute.
How you build trust, engagement, and psychological safety.
Learn moreAdaptive Thinking Intelligence
Recognise when reality has changed—and change with it.
How you navigate innovation, uncertainty, and change.
Learn moreRisk Judgement Intelligence
Make proportionate decisions when certainty is impossible.
How you make decisions under pressure and tolerate uncertainty.
Learn moreSafety Leadership Intelligence
Turn safety values into visible organisational action.
How visibly you lead and influence safety culture.
Learn moreHow SDIA™ measures it
The assessment combines structured questions across the six dimensions with scenario-based responses drawn from realistic safety-critical situations. Rather than testing knowledge, it surfaces decision tendencies — how a person gathers evidence, balances discipline with adaptability, communicates under pressure and exercises judgement when certainty is impossible.
Each dimension produces a balanced profile that identifies a core strength alongside its potential overuse — because every capability, taken too far, becomes a risk. The result is a personalised report with development priorities, reflection questions and actionable recommendations for coaching and growth.
